Beating the heat

The dog days of summer have arrived with full force and we are all trying to stay cool. It has been hot 30c with heavy humidity. This puts us in the danger zone for alpacas (80f and 80%humidity is the benchmark) so we need to provide methods of cooling.

The girls and the juvenile males like to dip in the pools. The adult males prefer that we spray the trees so they can stand under the dripping water.

The dogs seek the shade, and for us, we do what we can.

Hi Rob & Caroline
We had placed one of our mature females in with the young three yr old male. After several attepts during the day, he still sruggles with get the correct position.
Is this normal and will he get the hang of breeding eventually or is there something we should be doing??
Thanks Barry Eisenhauer

Hi Barry, Yup, this is normal and with time he will figure it out, don't give up. One of our younger guys was at the completly wrong end the first couple of attempts, but he managed to sort himself out.
